This 19th-century French lithograph captures the Calvados department with clarity and grace. Surrounding the delicately hand-colored map are fine engravings of prominent figures: Pierre-Simon Marquis de Laplace, the brilliant mathematician and astronomer; Daniel-François-Esprit Auber, the beloved composer of French opera; and Jules Dumont d’Urville, the famed explorer and naval officer. At the base, a vignette of Caen anchors the composition with architectural charm. A visually rich and historically layered artifact.
Dimensions: 51cm x 32.25cm cardstock (map approx. 34cm x 26cm if separated)
